about

This is the first of two upcoming releases from San Francisco composer Joel St. Julien. St. Julien has been building a name for himself as a composer for dance, film and other media for the past 5 years. Prior to that, he released albums on the now defunct Sounds Are Active label, with his former band, Ellul.

St. Julien created the songs that make up his latest work in between composing dance and film scores, sound design projects, and other commissioned pieces. Writing songs is a homecoming and this EP solidifies his mastery of the art. This album is about being let down and having absolutely no way out other than acceptance. Embarking on a fusion of off-beat rhythms, hushed vocals and ethereal soundscapes, St. Julien sits comfortably with musical syncretists such as Panda Bear, Stereolab, Dirty Projectors, but also gives nods to experimental artists like Tim Hecker and William Basinski. The album was written, produced and mixed in his one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco after his daughter was fast asleep. Another solid work in his catalog and a transport into the sonic world St. Julien creates for his listeners.

Press:

“All the Songs” sees San Francisco’s Joel St Julien crafting a beautifully scratchy, otherworldly beat ballad that is equal parts Yorke and Lotus.
-Dan Diggs

World-weariness has never been this thought-provoking or engaging.
-AFROPUNK.com

San Francisco based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist Joel St. Julien is the kind of guy who stays in the mode of a juggler, as taxing as it may be, because of the unexpected connections it yields...an assiduously self-motivated songwriter-architect...
-Foreign Accents

You will mostly be listening to a lot of experimentalism, but if you pull your ears a bit closer into the construction of the sounds, you will experience a medley of different genres, each and every time.
-Indie Shuffle

St. Julien is a remarkably talented sound designer. Every Rise is filled with superlative textures and atmospheres.
