about

What is hyper-gentrification? The craned skyline, unconscious colonization, income inequality, the sound of construction, food tours, *** on the streets – this is San Francisco. Composer Joel St. Julien is responding sonically. Building off of this current landscape of condos dropping from the sky, St. Julien made field recordings of construction sounds in San Francisco, and incorporated it through each piece of his latest album. From the stark opening of ‘No Safety’ to the climactic end of ‘When My Heart is Full…’, this music represents the artist’s emotive experience of the shifting nature of the city. Furthermore, though past work, it feels rightly in line with the current state of America - anxious, pensive, and divided.

Commissioned by RAWdance in the spring of 2015 to write a site-specific piece in the heart of San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens, St. Julien wrote the bulk of this piece at The Walden School's Creative Musicians Retreat in New Hampshire. This is the third work of original music he has composed for the critically acclaimed dance company.

Riding off the tails of his successful Every Rise EP, St. Julien is moving forward. Throughout the course of his compositions, he takes influences from experimental electronic artists such as Tim Hecker and William Basinski, coupling them with beat based contemporaries such as Bibio and Flying Lotus. Whether lyric based songs or instrumental compositions, Joel continues to push further.
